For National Fried Chicken Day (July 6) we mapped over 17,000 fried chicken chain restaurants nationwide and computed the number of stores per 100,000 people in each state and territory. The national average is 5.3 stores per 100,000. Fried chicken restaurants are most common in the Southeast and the Atlantic territories, with the Virgin Islands (17.2), Georgia (10.8), South Carolina (10.8), and Alabama (10.0) all exceeding 10 stores per 100,000.

We also looked at which chain had the most restaurants in each state. While KFC is the predominant chain in 35 states and the Virgin Islands, several other chains have a significant presence in the Southeast, Midatlantic, and Puerto Rico.
