Senior Citizen Population

For National Senior Citizens Day (August 21) we mapped the percent of the population age 65 and higher by county. Overall, 16.6% of the population is age 65+, but because many younger people are in densely populated counties, the majority of counties have a senior population above the U.S. average. The 25 counties with the highest percentage of senior citizens are highlighted on the map below. Five of those counties exceed 40%: Sumter FL (57.9%), Catron NM (42.2%), Jeff Davis TX (41.7%), La Paz AZ (40.5%), and Charlotte FL (40.3%).
