Mapping Software and GIS Glossary

DEFINITION

What is a Weighted Center?

The geographic center of a group of points can be found by simply averaging the coordinates of all of the points. The weighted center of a set of points is where the geographic center is adjusted for an attribute associated with each point. The weighted center will likely be shifted from the geographic center depending upon the attributes of the points.

Finding a weighted center of a group of points can be useful in site selection and analysis.
