For Bastille Day (July 14) we mapped the percent of the population with French ancestry by county. There are 8.6 million Americans (2.6%) with French Ancestry, primarily in Northern New England, Northern Michigan, and Louisiana. The counties with the greatest portion of French ancestry are Androscoggin ME (33.2%), Coos NH (31.7%), Aroostook ME (30.0%) and Saint Martin LA (29.0%). Overall, the states with the highest French population are Maine (19.4%), New Hampshire (19.3%), and Vermont (16.9%).
