Mapping Software and GIS Glossary

DEFINITION

What is Aggregation?

Aggregation is summing numeric values to a larger geographic feature from a smaller feature. It is common to have a map layer, such as ZIP Codes, that contains data such as population, number of customers, or sales amounts. You can use mapping software to get the population, number of customers, or total sales for a sales territory, a county, or a whole state by aggregating the values from the ZIP Codes that the larger features comprise.

In this example, the county layer (top) has information about the number of car dealers in each county. Maptitude can aggregate the numbers from the county layer to give you the total number of car dealers in each state (bottom).
